Eragrostis spectabilis (Purple Love Grass)
A compact, warm-season grass, Purple Love Grass is beloved for its airy clouds of reddish-purple seed heads that create a soft “purple haze” effect in late summer and fall. Its fine-textured foliage forms neat, low clumps that bring movement and texture to the garden. By autumn, the seed heads turn tan and persist, extending its ornamental value.
Tough and adaptable, it thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established. This short-lived perennial readily self-seeds, making it a good choice for naturalized plantings, borders, and meadow edges.
Light: Full sun
Soil: Dry to medium, well-drained (tolerates sandy or rocky)
Height: 1–2 ft
Bloom time: Late summer to fall
Wildlife value: Seeds for birds; cover for insects and small wildlife; adds late-season texture and color
✨ A charming, low-maintenance grass that delivers a dramatic purple glow — perfect for small gardens and naturalized landscapes.
