'Fireworks' is the goldenrod that finally convinced skeptics — arching stems radiate outward in a perfect burst of tiny golden flowers that genuinely do look like fireworks exploding. Compact and clump-forming at 3–4 ft tall with a graceful, cascading habit, it's one of the finest fall-blooming natives for any garden. Butterflies pour in for the late-season nectar, and goldfinches work the seedheads into winter. Tolerates clay, takes average to moist soil, handles part shade, and even qualifies as a cut flower.

The science behind goldenrods keeps getting more compelling. In a landmark three-year trial evaluating 70 goldenrod species, cultivars, and ecotypes, Mt. Cuba Center — one of the most respected native plant research institutions in the country — ranked Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' as one of the highest-scoring goldenrods of the entire trial. The study also documented over 20,000 insect visits to goldenrods, confirming them as host plants for caterpillars of more than 100 species of butterflies and moths, and a critical late-season nectar source for Monarchs and bumblebees. A plant that earns every inch of space it occupies — and the research to prove it.
