Brilliant blue spires bloom in late spring, arriving before most other natives have really gotten going. An essential host plant for the federally endangered Karner Blue butterfly, whose caterpillars feed exclusively on lupine leaves. Tolerates poor, sandy soils beautifully. Fixes nitrogen through root nodules. A true conservation plant.
