A cool-season native grass that earns its place in difficult conditions — moist shade, woodland edges, streambanks and restoration sites where other grasses struggle to establish. Virginia Wild Rye grows quickly, develops a densely tufted clump of variable blue-green to silver-green foliage, and produces distinctive bristly, wheat-like seed spikes that remain erect at maturity — unlike most other wild ryes whose spikes nod. A pioneer species invaluable for erosion control and bank stabilization. Turns attractive shades of tan, crimson and golden-red in fall. As a cool-season grass it grows most actively in spring and fall, slowing during the summer heat — pairing it with warm-season grasses like Big Bluestem and Switchgrass provides continuous interest. Native throughout Maryland including the Eastern Shore.
