Named for the Greek chelone — a nymph punished by being turned into a tortoise — and for its flowers that unmistakably resemble a turtle's head poking from its shell. White Turtlehead is one of the most distinctive late-season native wildflowers: upright, tidy, and covered in tight terminal clusters of white to blush-pink snapdragon-like flowers from August through October, long after most other plants have finished their display. A primary host plant for the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly, one of Maryland's most spectacular native butterflies. Beloved by bumblebees, which can be observed parting the flower lobes and crawling inside for nectar.
